ISLAMABAD: Federal Ombudsperson for Protection Against Harassment, Kashmala Tariq, made the decision to terminate the Pakistani embassy’s head of mission in Italy after claims of harassment got proven.
As detailed by Saira Imdad Ali, Grade 20 officer in the Ministry of Commerce, Pakistani Ambassador to Italy Nadeem Riaz was accused of sexual harassment on the job.
After Nadeem was fired and fined Rs5 million, a copy of the verdict was submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs within seven days of the ombudsperson’s ruling.
A complaint from Saira, who was stationed in Italy in 2018, alleged that Nadeem (the Pakistani mission’s chief) encouraged her to go to other countries while she was there, which was unrelated to her work.
She claimed that the leader of the operation had also ordered her to maintain her home close to his.
She went on to say that Nadeem made her listen to his stories every day and that the language he used was offensive.
