ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Murtaza Javed Abbasi, has claimed that a committee has been formed to construct a rail link between Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan.
During the question period, Murtaza Javed Abbasi made the comment in the National Assembly (NA). In regards to the train line, he stated that a Pakistan-Afghan committee had been formed.
“A railway track already exists in Uzbekistan and Afghanistan to Mazar-i-Sharif, whereas the work on another railway track from Mazar-i-Sharif to Torkham will shortly be launched.”.
Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique explained that the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan prevented the start of the Main Line-1 (ML-1) train project in his written answer.
In December 2021, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan agreed to resume construction on the train line. An inter-ministerial meeting was held to finalise the agreement after Uzbekistan presented a revised project blueprint.
The proposed roadmap was shared with Afghanistan and Uzbekistan following the end of the review process. It was discovered that the rail project’s development will be initiatedin June 2022 in compliance with the amended roadmap.
