ISLAMABAD: Chairman of the Senate, Sadiq Sanjrani, officially accepted Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar’s resignation from his position as a senator. This move follows Kakar’s appointment as the eighth caretaker prime minister of the country. Kakar, an independent lawmaker, was elected to the Senate in 2018. He has been an active participant in politics since then. His resignation signifies his intention to maintain neutrality in his role as the head of the interim government.
The Senate Secretariat released a notification that read: “Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, a Member of the Senate of Pakistan, has resigned from his seat. He took this step due to his principled stance of maintaining neutrality upon assuming the role of caretaker Prime Minister. The Honourable Chairman Senate has accepted the resignation, resulting in the vacancy of his seat as per clause (1) of Article 64 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. This vacancy is effective from 14 August.”
This development occurred a day after Kakar relinquished his membership of the BAP and stepped down as a senator. Kakar announced this development through a social media post. He cited the significant responsibility entrusted to him as caretaker prime minister as the reason for his decision.
Hailing from Balochistan, Kakar will take on the role of caretaker prime minister. He will oversee the country’s affairs during economic and political challenges until a new government is elected. Given the broader authority of the caretaker prime minister to make policy decisions in economic matters, the selection has taken on added importance.
There exists a potential for elections to be delayed by up to six months. This arises from the ECP needing to establish new boundaries for multiple federal and provincial constituencies before determining an election date.
