Pakistan’s newly elected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met British High Commissioner Christian Turner on Wednesday, who underlined the United Kingdom’s wish to “operate closely with Pakistan on expanding and widening bilateral collaboration.”
A no-confidence vote on April 9 deposed Imran Khan as Pakistan’s 23rd prime minister and elected Shehbaz as his successor.
The British high commissioner “congratulated him on entering the office and extended the best intentions of the British government” to the new prime minister at his first meeting with him today.
The PM’s office reported that Shehbaz has expressed his appreciation for the UK’s efforts to advance Pakistan’s education, health, and other social areas.
Thanking Pakistan’s prime minister, Turner said he hoped the two countries could work together to “deepen and widen their bilateral relationship.”
United Arab Emirates Ambassador Hamad Obaid Ibrahim Salem Al-Zaabi also contacted the PM to congratulate him on becoming prime minister and reiterated the Gulf country’s willingness to further develop bilateral relations with Pakistan on Tuesday
Last week, US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken congratulated Shehbaz on his election as Prime Minister and pledged to continue the US’ long-standing partnership with the Pakistani administration.
In his words: “The interests of both nations need a strong, and democratic Pakistan.”
