TORKHAM: Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations in Afghanistan were marked by the departure of a significant number of travellers who were permitted to cross the Torkham border by Pakistani officials for a limited period of time till April 29 by displaying their official identity card Tazkira.
After the deadline of April 29, officials will, according to official sources, adopt an alternative approach. Afghans applauded and praised Pakistani authorities for their decision.
Last month, Pakistan closed the Torkham border crossing for Afghan travellers, resulting in great hardships for them. A five-day grace period has been granted to the travellers on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
It reportedly trapped many returning Afghans at the Torkham border earlier this month when police refused to allow them to return since they had only produced Tazkira.
The government has implemented IVA System (IVAS) for Afghan citizens at the Torkham border in early March to regulate cross-border travel through security mechanisms.
