Police in India’s Gujarat state beat a man accused of killing his partner, according to reports. The incident sparked debate after footage circulated online.
Officials identified the suspect as Faizal Lakhani, whom police arrested in Bhavnagar. Police said they took him to the alleged crime scene on Friday to reconstruct the incident before officers struck him with bamboo batons.
Videos circulating on social media show Lakhani with his arms tied behind him. One officer repeatedly hit his legs and buttocks, while another video appeared to show officers beating him on his feet inside a bus terminal.
Police Defend Punishment
Police officer DP Unadkat said officers beat Lakhani to send a warning about violence against women. He also said the punishment aimed to make criminals fear the police, according to Indian media reports.
However, the incident divided public opinion. Some social media users praised the officers, arguing that the alleged crime required a response, while others condemned the beating because authorities have not secured conviction.
Legal Concerns Draw Attention
Public parading and police beatings of suspects have occurred in India despite Supreme Court rulings that prohibit such treatment. Consequently, the footage has renewed concerns about police conduct, due process and the treatment of suspects before trial.
Meanwhile, Bhavnagar police chief Nitesh Pandey declined to comment on the incident. The case has raised questions about whether authorities can use public punishment while investigating allegations.
Authorities have not indicated that Lakhani has been convicted. As the investigation continues, the dispute highlights the tension between demands for harsh action against alleged offenders and the legal principle that suspects remain innocent until proven guilty.
