PESHAWAR: Senior police officials said they had identified suspects involved in the gun attack on renowned urologist Dr Asif Malik and would soon make arrests as the investigation nears completion.
A senior official stated that authorities had traced those who opened fire on Dr Malik and were closing in on them. However, investigators have yet to determine the motive behind the attack. Officials added that further details would be disclosed after the suspects are taken into custody and interrogated.
Meanwhile, Dr Malik remains in stable condition at Peshawar General Hospital after sustaining injuries in the attack near his residence in the University Town area on Tuesday night. He was initially rushed to the hospital by his driver and treated in the intensive care unit.
Earlier, police indicated that the case was nearly 80 percent solved. Investigators reviewed CCTV footage, which showed the attackers เคชเฅเคเคพ Dr Malik in a car and later changing the vehicleโs registration number in an apparent attempt to evade identification.
Furthermore, officials suspect that someone familiar with Dr Malik may have played a role in the attack. Sources close to the doctor said he routinely worked late and travelled alone without security.
In addition, a relative revealed that despite being injured, Dr Malik managed to drive himself home before being taken to the hospital.
The City Police confirmed that investigators recovered three empty 30-bore bullet shells from the scene and registered a case on behalf of the victim. Consequently, authorities expect significant progress once arrests are made.
