Remarks accuse broadcaster of misrepresenting polling process through chosen interviews and locations
MUZAFFARABAD: A statement issued by the Pakistan Ministry of Information and Broadcasting; following polling in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has criticised Al Jazeera’s election coverage, alleging that the broadcaster selectively reported from chosen polling stations and presented a misleading picture of the voting process.
According to the statement, the channel focused on carefully selected polling locations, specific reporting times and interviews with particular individuals in a manner that allegedly distorted the overall conduct of the elections.
The statement argued that such reporting failed to reflect the broader electoral process and instead created what it described as an inaccurate portrayal of events in Muzaffarabad and other parts of AJK.
Accusations of biased coverage
The statement further alleged that the broadcaster relied on what it described as “yellow journalism” to shape public perception of the elections.
It claimed that the coverage served the interests of external actors seeking to undermine the credibility of the electoral process and cast doubt on the legitimacy of the vote.
According to the statement, the election reflected the democratic will of the people, who participated in the process despite political tensions and competing narratives surrounding the polls.
It also maintained that voters had rejected what it characterised as attempts to promote instability, coercion and disorder through the electoral process.
Election narrative disputed
The criticism comes as differing accounts of polling day continue to emerge from political parties, election observers and media organisations covering the AJK elections.
While the statement defended the conduct of the vote and rejected allegations of irregularities, Al Jazeera has not publicly responded to the criticism contained in the statement.
Media coverage of elections often becomes the subject of political debate, particularly when competing stakeholders dispute how events are portrayed.
Authorities and political observers are expected to continue assessing the electoral process as official results and post-election analyses become available.
The differing narratives underscore the importance of independent reporting, transparent electoral oversight and verified information in evaluating the conduct and outcome of democratic elections.
