Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Senator Ishaq Dar has pledged to undertake all diplomatic efforts aimed at securing the repatriation of incarcerated Pakistani neuroscientist Aafia Siddiqui from the United States. Senator Dar made this assurance in response to points raised by Mushtaq Ahmad during the Senate session.
Aafia Siddiqui, a prominent figure wanted by the FBI since 2003 for questioning regarding possible ties to al-Qaeda, was detained by Pakistani authorities. US officials alleged that upon her capture by Afghan police in July 2008, Siddiqui was found in possession of two pounds of sodium cyanide and a list of US landmarks, raising concerns about a potential mass casualty attack.
Senator Dar emphasized that upon the formation of the government’s cabinet, engaging with the United States on Aafia Siddiqui’s case would be a top priority agenda. He underscored the PML-N’s historical efforts to advocate for Siddiqui’s repatriation, reaffirming the party’s commitment to pursuing her case on diplomatic fronts.
In a significant development, Aafia Siddiqui’s sister, Fowzia Siddiqui, had the opportunity to meet her in May 2023 after 20 years of imprisonment in the United States. This meeting highlighted the enduring struggle for Aafia Siddiqui’s freedom and drew attention to her prolonged incarceration.
Senator Ishaq Dar’s assurance reflects the ongoing efforts within Pakistan’s political landscape to address Siddiqui’s case and seek justice for her. The commitment to diplomatic engagement underscores the importance of international cooperation and advocacy for the rights of Pakistani citizens detained abroad.
As the issue gains renewed attention and momentum, stakeholders continue to mobilize support and leverage diplomatic channels to push for Aafia Siddiqui’s repatriation and ensure her rights are upheld under international law.
