NEW YORK: Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif will raise Kashmir and Palestine issues when he addresses the United Nations General Assembly. Premier will address the UNGA on September 25 (Friday).
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, shared the details during a media briefing in New York.
He said multilateral cooperation, climate change and the current global situation would also feature in the prime minister’s speech.
The Foreign Office said Shehbaz would present Pakistan’s position on regional and global developments while stressing dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful conflict resolution.
Moreover, his address will cover sustainable development, counterterrorism, Islamophobia, global economic challenges and reforms at the United Nations.
The prime minister will also raise issues affecting the Global South and draw attention to Palestine and Jammu and Kashmir.
Meanwhile, Shehbaz is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders and the UN secretary-general during his New York visit.
Ahmad also said Pakistan was working to arrange a meeting between Shehbaz and Apple Executive Chairman Tim Cook.
The visit comes as the 81st UNGA session begins its high-level activities in New York amid major regional and international challenges.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has already arrived in New York and is holding meetings with foreign ministers and other officials.
Dar will attend several meetings focused on Kashmir and Palestine alongside other diplomatic engagements during the UNGA session.
Pakistan has consistently raised the Kashmir dispute at the United Nations and called for its settlement under relevant UN resolutions.
Likewise, Islamabad continues to support Palestinian statehood and calls for a peaceful resolution based on relevant international frameworks.
The Foreign Office has said Pakistan will use the UNGA platform to advocate diplomacy, international cooperation and peaceful solutions to ongoing disputes.
Shehbaz’s September 25 address will therefore outline Pakistan’s priorities on regional security, global cooperation and several major international issues.
