Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif decided on Sunday to postpone his upcoming official visit to Russia. The Prime Minister’s Office issued a clear statement explaining the move. Officials pointed directly to the “recent regional and internal situation” as the main reason for the delay.
The planned trip carried great importance for both nations. It aimed to strengthen bilateral ties and open new opportunities for cooperation. However, current events made the timing unsuitable. Therefore, leaders agreed to reschedule after mutual consultations. A fresh date will emerge soon through diplomatic channels.
Russian media earlier reported that PM Shehbaz intended to travel from March 3 to 5. The visit would have included high-level talks on trade, energy, and security matters.
Why the Postponement Now?
Several pressing developments forced this decision. First, Pakistan launched Operation Ghazab lil-Haq against the Afghan Taliban earlier this week. Afghan forces had repeatedly targeted Pakistani border positions, prompting a strong military response. Moreover, tensions along the western frontier remain high, demanding close attention from Islamabad.
At the same time, the region faces even greater upheaval. The United States and Israel carried out strikes on Saturday that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran. Iran quickly labeled the action unprovoked and illegal. In response, Tehran fired missiles toward Israel and at least seven other countries, including Gulf states hosting US military bases.
These events triggered widespread protests across major Pakistani cities on Sunday. Demonstrators expressed anger over the assassination and broader regional instability. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi appealed to citizens to stay peaceful and avoid any violence.

By postponing the Russia trip, the government shows its focus on managing immediate security threats and maintaining domestic calm. Officials emphasize that bilateral relations with Moscow remain strong. They look forward to rescheduling the visit when conditions allow meaningful progress.
