ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a crucial meeting with Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), on Wednesday during the World Government Summit (WGS) 2025. The discussions centered on Pakistan’s ongoing IMF program and the progress made in achieving macroeconomic stability through the government’s comprehensive reform agenda.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to structural reforms and fiscal discipline, which have played a key role in restoring economic stability and will be essential for driving sustainable growth moving forward.
Georgieva praised Pakistan’s efforts in effectively implementing the IMF-supported program, noting the country’s improving economic performance, including rising growth and declining inflation. She acknowledged Pakistan’s path to recovery and growth under the leadership of PM Shehbaz.
The IMF Managing Director also commended the Prime Minister’s commitment to the reform agenda and reiterated the IMF’s continued support. She stressed the importance of sustained fiscal discipline, structural reforms, and good governance to ensure long-term economic stability and growth.
In return, PM Shehbaz highlighted the significant progress under the IMF’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF), which has been vital in stabilizing Pakistan’s economy and setting it on a path to long-term recovery. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to maintaining reform momentum, particularly in key areas like tax reform, energy sector efficiency, and private sector development.
The Prime Minister assured Georgieva of Pakistan’s commitment to economic prudence, efficiency, and sustainability, which are essential for achieving inclusive and sustained growth.
In a separate social media post on X, PM Shehbaz expressed gratitude for the IMF’s continued support as Pakistan moves from macroeconomic stability to sustained growth and prosperity. Meanwhile, Georgieva acknowledged the government’s strong commitment to IMF-supported reforms and their decisive actions to pave the way for higher growth and job creation for Pakistan’s youthful population.
On Tuesday, an IMF delegation, led by Joel Turkewitz, met with Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, Chairman of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), at the Supreme Court. The IMF delegation expressed appreciation for the judiciary’s role in maintaining stability and acknowledged ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening governance and accountability.
This development follows the announcement from the Finance Ministry that a three-member IMF mission would visit Pakistan to conduct a Governance and Corruption Diagnostic Assessment under the country’s 2024 Extended Fund Facility program.
