Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting on Wednesday to review the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the PTI’s planned march on Islamabad. The party has scheduled the protest for October 4 after postponing its earlier date.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry attended the meeting. Naqvi briefed the prime minister on law and order in KP, while Tarar discussed constitutional and legal matters concerning the province.
Government Reviews Legal And Constitutional Options
According to sources, the meeting also discussed backchannel contacts with PTI leaders and various legal and constitutional options concerning the situation. Prime Minister Shehbaz decided to consult all relevant stakeholders before taking any decision regarding KP.
The consultations come as tensions continue between the federal government and the PTI-led provincial administration. Meanwhile, PTI Interim Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has said the party’s October 4 march remains on schedule.
Security Concerns Remain In Focus
The federal government’s consultations also follow a series of security incidents in KP. Prime Minister Shehbaz recently praised security forces for operations against militants in KP and Balochistan.
The political situation has also intensified ahead of the planned march. KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has reiterated that the protest will proceed, while Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has warned of action against anyone creating unrest.
The prime minister is also expected to meet President Asif Ali Zardari to discuss developments in the province. Further consultations are expected before the federal government decides its next steps.
