Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered a comprehensive audit of power distribution companies’ billing systems. He reaffirmed that power sector reforms remain among the government’s highest priorities. The directive came during a review meeting on Thursday.
PM Pushes Reforms To Improve Power Sector
The prime minister said distribution companies have shown noticeable performance improvements. However, he stressed that additional reforms remain necessary. He also described nationwide smart meter installation as essential for the sector’s transformation.
Furthermore, PM Shehbaz directed authorities to strengthen oversight across the power sector. He instructed officials to eliminate electricity theft through stricter enforcement measures.
The prime minister also ordered the Power Division to develop clear performance indicators. Moreover, he called for integrated targets supported by specific implementation timelines.
To encourage healthy competition, PM Shehbaz announced awards for the best-performing distribution company. He said recognition would motivate companies to improve service delivery.
Smart Meters And Solar Projects Prioritised
The prime minister directed officials to introduce village-level solarisation projects. He said decentralised solar systems could reduce pressure on the national electricity grid.
Officials informed the meeting that technical and commercial losses have gradually declined. They added that Islamabad, Lahore, and Gujranwala power companies recorded the lowest transmission and distribution losses last fiscal year.
Meanwhile, Islamabad, Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Multan distribution companies achieved 100 percent bill recoveries during fiscal year 2025-26.
Officials also said Disco Support Units now operate in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Lahore, Multan, and Hazara. These units aim to reduce electricity theft, improve recoveries, and resolve technical issues. Additionally, the first phase of the Asset Performance Management System will conclude by September 30.
