Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is holding consultations with coalition partners as political tensions increase ahead of different planned protests, with the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa expected to remain a key issue.
A source at the Prime Minister’s House said the PM Shehbaz would also meet President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari. Discussions are expected to include the possibility of imposing governor’s rule in KP, which is governed by the PTI.
The proposed move has gained attention amid rising terrorist attacks in the province and the PTI’s planned march towards Islamabad on October 4. The government has warned that the deteriorating security situation could leave it with limited options.
Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah said Shehbaz was briefed about the political situation after returning from the United States. He also said the government had constitutional authority to impose an emergency if circumstances required it.
Meanwhile, the PML-N and PPP held talks at the National Assembly on Wednesday. PPP leaders Sherry Rehman and Syed Naveed Qamar met Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry to discuss the situation in KP.
Tarar said governor’s rule was a constitutional option that could be used when necessary. Chaudhry said the government was considering Article 232 due to increasing terrorism, stressing that the decision would be based on security concerns rather than political considerations.
Shehbaz may also meet opposition leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai to seek consultations and reduce tensions before the PTI’s October 4 protest. The prime minister is also expected to meet Jamaat-i-Islami chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman over the petroleum levy and related demands.
