Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held detailed talks with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday during the 81st United Nations General Assembly session in New York.
The two leaders discussed major regional and global challenges, with particular focus on conflicts in the Middle East and efforts to promote peace.
Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s position that dialogue and diplomacy should remain central to resolving conflicts and restoring regional stability.
He also reiterated Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and statehood.
Additionally, the prime minister raised concerns about rising Islamophobia and the threat of terrorism from Afghan territory.
Shehbaz thanked Guterres for recognising Pakistan’s contributions to international peace and security and its sacrifices in counterterrorism efforts.
PM Shehbaz, Lebanese Counterpart Discuss Ties
Separately, Shehbaz met Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and reviewed bilateral relations and developments across the Middle East.
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening longstanding relations between Pakistan and Lebanon.
Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, political independence, unity and territorial integrity.
He called for an immediate end to hostilities, adherence to ceasefire arrangements and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from occupied Lebanese territory.
The leaders also discussed expanding cooperation in trade, investment, defence and institutional ties.
They further agreed on continued coordination at the United Nations and other multilateral forums.
