Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership and successful candidates after the party maintained its lead in the second phase of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections. Unofficial results showed the party secured 14 of the 18 seats contested on Sunday.
The PML-N strengthened its position following its strong performance in the first phase of the elections. Previously, the party won nine of the 13 seats in Mirpur division, while its coalition partner, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), secured the remaining four.
However, the PPP alleged electoral irregularities, rigging and violence during the second phase. The party had also raised similar concerns after the first round of polling.
PM Says Results Reflect Public Confidence
In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the PML-N leadership and newly elected candidates. He said the party’s continued success reflected the efforts of PML-N President Nawaz Sharif and the entire party.
According to the prime minister, the election results demonstrate the people’s confidence in the PML-N’s policies. Furthermore, he praised the party’s campaign, describing it as successful and well organised.
Shehbaz Sharif also said the development and prosperity of AJK remain the party’s highest priority. Therefore, he pledged to continue working for the welfare of the region’s residents.
Third Phase Of AJK Elections Still Pending
The AJK elections are taking place in three phases because of security considerations. The second phase included polling in seven constituencies of Muzaffarabad division and 12 refugee seats reserved for refugees from Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Meanwhile, the third and final phase will cover 11 constituencies in Poonch division.
The prime minister also welcomed the participation of political parties throughout the electoral process. He said broad participation would further strengthen democratic institutions and reinforce the democratic process in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
