Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a meeting of the federal cabinet on Sunday amid escalating tensions between the federal government and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led administration in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The meeting comes as the Centre considers constitutional measures to address the province’s security situation and its disagreements with the provincial government over counterterrorism policy. According to sources, the cabinet was expected to discuss the possible imposition of an emergency and governor’s rule in the province.
The development follows growing friction between the ruling coalition and PTI, particularly over security decisions and approaches to tackling militancy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Government Considers Constitutional Measures
Sources said that senior leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) finalised a plan on Saturday to bring the province under federal control through constitutional provisions.
The proposed measures involve Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution. Article 232 concerns the proclamation of an emergency in a province, while Article 234 provides for governor’s rule when constitutional machinery fails.
Information Minister Ataullah Tarar confirmed that Shehbaz had called the cabinet meeting to discuss the available options. He also indicated that holding the meeting on a weekly holiday reflected the seriousness of the matter.
A federal government source said cabinet approval was expected for a series of measures, although the Constitution does not require the cabinet’s approval for the process.
PTI And Centre Remain At Odds
Meanwhile, PTI maintains that the federal government excludes its provincial administration from security-related decisions. The Centre has denied the allegation.
The two sides also disagree over counterterrorism policy and the provincial government’s approach to dialogue with the Afghan Taliban. Federal ministers have criticised PTI for proceeding with its protest march on October 4 despite government warnings.
The proposed constitutional steps could further intensify political tensions between Islamabad and the KP government. However, the cabinet meeting is still underway and no final decision had been confirmed.
