Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari held a key meeting on Tuesday to review Pakistan’s political and security situation amid the ongoing PTI long march toward Islamabad. Senior political leaders and members of the government’s negotiation team also attended the discussions, according to media reports.
The meeting took place at Aiwan-e-Sadr shortly after a ceremony honoring United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. During the session, the leadership reviewed recent political developments and examined the evolving situation linked to the PTI-led protest movement.
PTI Long March Comes Under Review
Sources said the president and prime minister discussed the implications of the PTI long march, which began in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and is moving toward the federal capital. The march is being led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and seeks the release of PTI founder Imran Khan.
The two leaders also received briefings from officials involved in recent contacts with the opposition. Consequently, they reviewed the latest developments following the collapse of negotiations between the government and PTI before the launch of the protest.
Leadership Stresses Continued Consultation
According to reports, President Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz agreed to maintain close consultation before taking any constitutional or legal steps related to the developing political situation. They also reviewed the broader security environment as authorities continue implementing measures around Islamabad.
The meeting comes at a time of heightened political activity across the country. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz has urged PTI to resolve issues through dialogue and call off the march, while the government continues to monitor the situation closely.
