Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is planning to launch direct flights to the Maldives after adding more aircraft to its fleet.
The proposed service would establish direct air connectivity between Pakistan and the Maldives.
It could also support tourism, trade and stronger people-to-people links between the two countries.
Maldives Flights Depend on New Aircraft
PIA Chief Executive Officer Air Vice Marshal Muhammad Amir Hayat said the airline would begin the Maldives service after new aircraft join its fleet.
The airline has therefore linked the launch timeline to fleet expansion.
The proposal was discussed during a meeting at PIA’s head office with a Maldivian delegation.
The delegation was led by National Assembly Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla.
Direct Route Could Boost Tourism and Trade
Abdulla said direct flights could increase tourism and bilateral trade.
He also highlighted the potential for greater people-to-people contact between Pakistan and the Maldives.
Officials said improved air connectivity could further strengthen relations between the two countries.
PIA Works on Fleet Expansion
The proposal comes as PIA continues efforts to expand and modernize its aircraft fleet.
Boeing is expected to submit a revised aircraft acquisition proposal to the national airline.
The development follows recent discussions between Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and Boeing Global President Dr. Brendan Nelson.
The talks also considered earlier aircraft delivery slots and interim leasing options.
