Tehran reiterates support as indirect Hamas-Israel negotiations continue
TEHRAN: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Wednesday that Tehran would support any decision reached by Palestinian leaders during the ongoing indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel, reaffirming Iran’s political backing for the Palestinian leadership.
According to Iranian state media, Pezeshkian conveyed the message during a telephone conversation with Khalil al-Hayya, head of Hamas’ political bureau. The Iranian president emphasized that decisions concerning the negotiations should remain in the hands of Palestinian leaders and pledged Tehran’s continued support for whatever course they choose.
The remarks come as international mediators continue efforts to secure progress in indirect negotiations aimed at addressing the conflict in Gaza. While Iran reiterated its support for the Palestinian position, officials did not disclose additional details regarding the content of the discussions or any specific proposals under consideration.
Previous reports highlighted differing positions
The latest statement follows reports published last week suggesting that officials from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had encouraged Hamas representatives not to endorse a proposed Board of Peace (BoP) disarmament agreement.
According to those reports, Hamas officials discussed the proposal during a recent visit to Iran, where they attended the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. A senior US official also claimed Tehran attempted to persuade Hamas to reject the agreement, although the report stated that the group ultimately chose to make its own decision.
Negotiations remain under international mediation
Meanwhile, senior officials involved in the Board of Peace initiative previously said negotiations had taken months of intensive diplomacy to reach the current stage. They described the process as complex, noting that Hamas had raised multiple concerns before discussions advanced.
Diplomatic efforts to secure a broader agreement remain ongoing, with mediators continuing consultations aimed at implementing future arrangements and reducing tensions in the region. Iran has maintained that it will continue supporting Palestinian leaders while closely monitoring developments in the negotiations.
