Senior Pentagon officials are facing mounting political pressure following the Republican Party’s heavy defeat in the November 3 US midterm elections, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emerging as a major target of criticism.
Democrats captured control of Congress, raising the prospect of investigations into President Donald Trump’s handling of the Iran war and the Pentagon’s military decisions.
Republican lawmakers and political allies have increasingly blamed Hegseth for encouraging Trump to launch military operations against Iran without developing a clear exit strategy. Critics argue that the prolonged conflict has increased economic pressure and contributed to the party’s electoral losses.
Meanwhile, Republican Representative Thomas Massie plans to initiate impeachment proceedings against Hegseth when Congress returns next week. Several lawmakers reportedly expect the proposal to receive substantial support.
Vice President JD Vance also acknowledged that the Iran war played a major role in the Republican defeat, although he did not directly blame individual officials.
Trump, however, defended Hegseth, describing his performance as very good and dismissing suggestions that he might replace him.
Hegseth has vowed to remain in office and defend the Pentagon’s decisions against congressional scrutiny. Democrats are expected to intensify investigations after assuming control of Congress in January, potentially creating further uncertainty for the administration.
