At least fifty seven people have been killed and many have been injured in an explosion that took place during Friday prayers at an Imambargah located in the old Qissa Khawani bazaar of Peshawar.
One eyewitness informed that he witnessed a guy initially shoot fire at the house of worship in the Koocha Risaldar neighbourhood, and then detonated a suicide vest after he ran out of bullets.
According to the initial accounts, several wounded have been taken to the neighbouring Lady Reading Hospital. Children and the elderly are among the victims, including some badly affected.
Rescue personnel are at the scene of the explosion, which happened in an area of the market with tight passageways, packed streets and heavy footfall. Locals have joined the rescue attempts and photos from the location show people transferring the injured to ambulances.
A big presence of security officers have also reached the site and efforts are ongoing to fence off the area.
This is a developing story.
