A Tasty Victory in a Tight Final
Peru has emerged victorious in the highly anticipated “World Cup of Breakfasts,” a viral international food competition launched by Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos. The contest, which featured 16 countries from around the globe, came down to a closely fought final between Peru and Venezuela — with Peru’s beloved breakfast dish, pan con chicharrón, edging out Venezuela’s reina pepiada arepa by just 200,000 votes.
The voting took place across major social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts, where users showed their support by liking videos of the competing dishes. Peru received an impressive 12.8 million likes, while Venezuela trailed slightly with 12.6 million.
The winning dish, pan con chicharrón, is a classic Peruvian Sunday street food made with fried salted pork, slices of sweet potato, zesty onion sauce, and served in a crusty French-style bread — a rich, flavorful combination that captured the hearts and appetites of millions online.
National Pride and Global Recognition
News of the victory sparked celebrations across Peru, with social media erupting in patriotic joy. President Dina Boluarte congratulated the nation, calling the win a moment of cultural pride. The Ministry of Transport and Communications chimed in on social media, proudly declaring that “Peru offers the world’s best breakfast.”
Streamer Ibai Llanos, whose immense online following helped turn the competition into a global sensation, announced plans to travel to Lima to personally deliver the golden frying pan trophy to the winners.
The tournament featured culinary contenders from countries such as the United States, Spain, Mexico, Ecuador, and Japan, but Peru’s flavorful tradition and passionate online support proved unbeatable.
