The Pentagon has decided to reduce its troops deployed in Europe because of a rift with NATO matters with the European nations.
According to the latest reports, Pentagon is withdrawing up to 40,000 US troops from Europe.
It will mark a one-third reduction in the presence of American troops in Europe.
NBC News reported that about 80,000 US troops currently serve across Europe, citing current and former US and Western officials familiar with the discussions.
However, officials stressed that no final decision has been made on the proposed troop reductions. Germany, Italy and Spain could face significant effects because they host some of the largest US military deployments on the continent. The options form part of a six-month Pentagon review of America’s military presence across Europe.
Meanwhile, Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, head of US European Command and NATO’s supreme allied commander, is expected to submit an initial assessment to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on Friday. The assessment will examine options involving US air, naval and ground forces, including potentially shifting troops toward NATO’s eastern flank.
According to NBC News, Hegseth is expected to receive a final recommendation on November 6 before officials present any proposal to President Donald Trump. The Trump administration has repeatedly urged European allies to assume greater responsibility for conventional defence while Washington directs more resources toward other regions.
However, some US lawmakers and European governments have raised concerns that a rapid withdrawal could weaken NATO’s ability to deter Russia.
Furthermore, NBC News reported disagreements between the State Department and Pentagon over the review.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly intervened in June after the Pentagon prepared to brief NATO defence ministers about possible large-scale troop reductions.
Separately, several senators have urged Rubio to ensure State Department officials and US diplomats remain fully involved in the force posture review. The review could therefore reshape Washington’s military commitments across Europe if the administration approves substantial troop reductions.
