The Pentagon and Lockheed Martin have announced a major 10-year agreement to produce 850 F-35 fighter jets. The deal marks a significant expansion of America’s military aircraft programme.
The agreement aims to strengthen US defence capabilities, increase weapons production, and support the country’s military industry.
Pentagon and Lockheed Martin Reach Historic Agreement
The Pentagon described the deal as an important step toward modernizing and expanding the F-35 Lightning II programme.
However, the agreement remains a preliminary framework. It still requires congressional approval and funding before the companies can finalize production contracts.
Officials have not disclosed the total value of the agreement.
The F-35 programme includes three aircraft variants, with some models costing more than $100 million each.
Lockheed Martin Announces $7 Billion Investment
Under the proposed arrangement, Lockheed Martin will invest $7 billion in projects supporting F-35 production and maintenance.
The company expects these investments to improve manufacturing efficiency and strengthen supply chains.
Lockheed CEO Jim Taiclet said the agreement would provide greater stability for suppliers and support long-term production.
The framework also covers spare parts, aircraft modifications, maintenance, and orders from international customers.
Deal Could Support Over 315,000 American Jobs
Lockheed Martin expects the programme to support more than 315,000 jobs and generate nearly $80 billion in economic activity.
Currently, more than 1,375 F-35 aircraft operate worldwide.
The latest announcement follows growing international demand for advanced fighter jets.
Meanwhile, Lockheed Martin shares rose more than 6% following the announcement.
The proposed agreement highlights Washington’s efforts to strengthen military readiness and secure long-term aircraft production.
