LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has advised citizens to take precautionary measures as a heatwave currently sweeping across the province is expected to intensify in the coming days. Temperatures are forecast to peak by May 19, particularly in major cities and the plains of Punjab.
Speaking to a news channel, a PDMA spokesperson urged tourists planning trips to Murree to stay updated on weather conditions and avoid travel during periods of unstable weather.
Residents and visitors have also been advised to remain indoors during severe weather, avoid open or exposed areas, and follow official travel guidance. Commissioners and deputy commissioners throughout Punjab have been directed to remain on high alert in anticipation of potential heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast strong winds and thundershowers in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and nearby mountainous areas, particularly during the evening and nighttime.
A widespread heatwave is expected to affect Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, and Balochistan, with daytime temperatures soaring. However, some regions may experience relief in the form of gusty winds, thundershowers, or rain later in the day.
Health officials have also issued warnings, urging the public—especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with existing health conditions—to take extra care during this period.
Authorities have issued the following safety tips:
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
- Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun
- Take cold showers or baths to cool down
- Wear light, breathable, and loose-fitting clothing
