South African Coach Secures Two-Year Contract
The Pakistan Cricket Board has appointed former South African cricketer Michael Smith as the batting coach of the Pakistan men’s national team.
The PCB confirmed the appointment on Tuesday. Smith has signed a two-year contract and will work with the national side across Test, One-Day International and Twenty20 cricket.
The 46-year-old coach is expected to join the Pakistan squad before its three-match Test series against England. The opening Test will begin at Headingley in Leeds on August 19.
His appointment gives Pakistan a specialist batting coach ahead of one of the team’s most challenging overseas assignments.
Smith will be responsible for improving batting techniques, preparing players for different conditions and helping the team develop plans against opposition bowlers.
The role will also involve working closely with Pakistan’s head coaches, team management and senior players across all formats.
Smith Brings Extensive Playing and Coaching Experience
Michael Smith played domestic cricket in South Africa for approximately 10 years between 2003 and 2013.
The right-handed batter appeared in 89 first-class matches, 72 List A games and 16 Twenty20 fixtures.
He scored a combined 7,029 runs across the three formats. His record included nine centuries and 40 half-centuries.
Smith moved into coaching after completing his playing career. He holds a Level 4 coaching qualification, one of the highest professional coaching certifications in cricket.
His experience includes several assignments in Pakistan’s domestic franchise competition.
Smith has previously worked with Islamabad United, Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League. These roles have given him experience of working with leading Pakistani and international players.
He has also served as a batting coach within Cricket Tasmania’s men’s programme. The Australian organisation appointed him as an assistant coach specialising in batting development.
Smith has additionally worked with the Hobart Hurricanes, giving him experience in Australia’s Big Bash League and exposure to high-level Twenty20 cricket.
His coaching career also includes consultancy roles with South African domestic teams KZN Inland and Eastern Province.
England Test Series to Mark First Major Assignment
Smith’s first major challenge will be Pakistan’s Test tour of England.
The first Test will be played at Headingley from August 19 to August 23.
The second match is scheduled at Lord’s in London from August 27 to August 31. The third and final Test will take place at Edgbaston in Birmingham from September 9 to September 13.
All three matches are part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle.
English conditions traditionally test a batter’s technique against seam and swing bowling. Smith is expected to work closely with Pakistan’s players on footwork, shot selection and adapting to movement through the air and off the pitch.
The two-year contract means Smith could also play an important role in Pakistan’s preparations for future international tournaments.
His knowledge of red-ball and limited-overs cricket is expected to help the national side develop a more consistent batting approach across formats.
The PCB has described the appointment as part of its efforts to strengthen the national team’s support structure ahead of a demanding international schedule.
