The authorities have reopened Parachinar Airport after a prolonged closure, marking a key development for regional connectivity in northwestern Pakistan. Officials confirmed on Monday that the facility has now entered its operational phase following extensive rehabilitation work.
Upgrades and trial operations completed
The restoration project involved coordinated efforts by the Frontier Works Organisation and the Pakistan Airports Authority. Moreover, teams upgraded runway infrastructure, safety systems, and supporting airport facilities to meet operational requirements.
On April 26, aviation authorities conducted successful landing and takeoff trials at the airport. As a result, six test flight operations were completed without issues, confirming readiness for regular use.
In addition, officials stated that the runway and terminal facilities comply with international safety standards. Consequently, the airport has now transitioned from testing to full operational readiness.
Connectivity and economic impact expected
Meanwhile, authorities expect the reopening to significantly improve access to the remote Kurram region. The airport is also expected to strengthen emergency response capabilities, particularly in areas with limited road connectivity.

Previously, assessment teams from the Pakistan Airports Authority and Pakistan International Airlines evaluated the airport’s potential for commercial and humanitarian operations. Additionally, an eight-member committee reviewed infrastructure upgrades and feasibility for reopening.
