Teenage Player Dies One Week After Being Shot
A 17-year-old Palestinian footballer has died from injuries sustained during an attack in the occupied West Bank.
Fadi Hamdallah al-Nassan died on Saturday, one week after he was shot in the village of Al-Mughayyir, east of Ramallah.
Nassan played for Al-Mughayyir Club. He was also a member of the Palestinian national youth football team.
The Palestine Football Association said Israeli forces shot the teenager while settlers were attacking his village on July 11.
Nassan was reportedly struck in the thigh. Doctors later amputated his injured leg in an attempt to save his life.
However, his condition continued to deteriorate. He eventually died from his injuries at the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the circumstances of the shooting.
Family and Teammates Mourn Young Footballer
Dozens of mourners gathered outside the hospital to carry Nassanโs body back to his village for burial.
People dressed in black accompanied the funeral procession. Relatives, friends, football players and local residents gathered to pay tribute to the teenager.
His father, Hamdallah al-Nassan, said his son was deeply passionate about football.
He said the teenager went towards the scene after hearing women and girls screaming during the reported settler attack.
According to his father, Nassan wanted to help those facing danger. He was then shot during the violence.
His mother, Hanan al-Nassan, described him as a successful student and a talented athlete.
She said her son was loved throughout the community because of his character, kindness and commitment to sport.
The Palestinian official news agency Wafa reported that two other residents were struck by rubber bullets during the incident.
A 10-year-old boy was also reportedly hit on the head by a stun grenade.
These accounts remain based on Palestinian official and witness statements. A complete independent account of the confrontation was not immediately available.
Death Raises Fresh Concern Over West Bank Violence
Nassanโs death has increased concern about escalating settler attacks and military violence in the occupied West Bank.
The United Nations has documented a sharp rise in attacks attributed to Israeli settlers since the Gaza war began in October 2023.
Palestinian communities near Ramallah and other West Bank areas have increasingly organised local night patrols because of repeated settler raids. Residents say they often feel unprotected during such attacks.
Figures compiled from Palestinian Health Ministry data indicate that Israeli soldiers or settlers have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians in the West Bank since October 2023.
The continuing violence has affected families, schools, farms and sporting communities across the territory.
The teenagerโs death comes as Israel moves forward with another major expansion of settlements in the West Bank.
Israelโs security cabinet recently approved approximately $434 million to establish 34 new settlements. The plan would increase the total number initiated during Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrichโs four-year tenure to 103.
Palestinians, the United Nations and most countries consider Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank illegal under international law.
Israel disputes that position and maintains historical and security claims over the territory.
Critics argue that settlement expansion encourages displacement, restricts Palestinian movement and makes a future independent Palestinian state increasingly difficult to establish.
For Nassanโs family, the political dispute has now become a deeply personal tragedy.
His death has also deprived Palestinian football of a promising young player who hoped to represent his country internationally.
