Pakistani filmmaker Kamran Faiq has achieved international recognition as his short film, The Last Glance, qualifies for the Academy Awards longlist. The film earned this opportunity after winning the Jury Award for Best Short at the 21st Tasveer Film Festival in Seattle, held from October 13 to 18, 2026.
The achievement marks an important milestone for Pakistan’s film industry, highlighting the growing international reach of local filmmakers. However, Faiq clarified that qualifying for the Oscars longlist does not mean the film has secured an official nomination.
Film Earns Recognition at International Festivals
The Last Glance follows a family forced to flee their village under the cover of darkness to escape violence. The story explores the challenges faced by families caught in dangerous circumstances.
The film features Adnan Shah Tipu, Areej Ayub and Fahad Hashmi, among other performers. Faiq wrote, produced and directed the project, while Umer Peerzada served as producer and Khalid Saeed Khan worked as executive producer. Mike McNamara and Armeena Rana Khan also contributed as co-producers.
Furthermore, the film recently won the Best International Short Film award at the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival in Canada. This recognition added to its growing list of international achievements and strengthened its position on the global festival circuit.
The Last Glance Advances Towards Oscars Competition
Faiq explained that thousands of short films compete for recognition, while only a limited number qualify for the Oscars longlist. He also revealed that the team is working to bring an Oscar-nominated actor on board as an executive producer to represent the film during the awards campaign.
Additionally, The Last Glance secured a place among eight finalists for the short film programme at the Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles. The selection included films representing more than 50 Asian countries, further expanding the Pakistani production’s international exposure.
Although the film still faces the next stages of the awards process, its achievements offer encouragement to Pakistan’s independent filmmakers. Its growing festival success demonstrates how local stories can reach audiences worldwide.
