ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s renowned botanist and academic Professor Dr Zabta Khan Shinwari has been included in the world’s top 2% scientists list for the seventh time, recognising his contributions to botanical research and plant biology.
According to Associated Press of Pakistan, the latest edition of the international list was released on October 7, 2026. Dr Shinwari, currently serving as vice chancellor of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology, has earned international recognition for his extensive research and academic contributions.
Dr Shinwari previously appeared on the list for six consecutive years, from 2018 to 2023. His latest inclusion reinforces his longstanding presence in international scientific research and highlights Pakistan’s contributions to global scholarship.
Throughout his career, the scientist has published approximately 700 research papers in international journals. Other researchers have cited his work more than 27,000 times, demonstrating its influence across scientific literature.
His research focuses on botany, plant biology, biotechnology and medicinal plants. His broader academic interests also include biodiversity conservation, molecular systematics and the sustainable use of natural resources.
Beyond his research achievements, Dr Shinwari has held several senior academic positions and contributed to higher education and scientific development in Pakistan. His work has also supported efforts to strengthen research capacity and encourage scientific collaboration.
His latest recognition comes at a time when Pakistan faces growing pressure to improve research funding, university standards and opportunities for young scientists. Experts frequently emphasise the importance of sustained investment in laboratories, postgraduate education and international research partnerships.
However, international recognition alone cannot address these structural challenges. Pakistan must translate individual achievements into stronger research institutions, improved scientific facilities and greater opportunities for emerging researchers.
Dr Shinwari’s achievement offers an encouraging example of Pakistani scholarship gaining international visibility while highlighting the importance of building a sustainable research culture.
