Emergency crews recover 14-year-old’s body after extensive search in prohibited bathing area
ROME: A 14-year-old Pakistani-origin boy drowned in Lake Gerolotto near Brescia, Italy, after reportedly attempting to rescue his sister, according to Italian media reports.
The victim, identified as Kamran Ahmed, had visited the lake with his 18-year-old sister to escape the summer heat. Local reports said the area is prohibited for public bathing.
According to initial accounts, Kamran’s sister entered deep water and began struggling. Kamran reportedly jumped into the lake in an attempt to help her. While the sister managed to reach the shore safely, Kamran, who reportedly could not swim, disappeared beneath the water.
Rescue operation lasts nearly 90 minutes
Emergency services quickly responded to the incident, deploying firefighters, specialist divers, police officers and ambulance personnel to the scene. Rescue teams from Milan and a helicopter from Bologna also joined the search operation.
After approximately 90 minutes, divers recovered Kamran’s body from a depth of about 12 metres. Medical personnel confirmed his death at the scene.
Authorities have not announced any further details regarding the incident, and the circumstances surrounding the drowning remain subject to official investigation.
Communities mourn teenager’s death
Kamran was born in Brescia and played for a local junior football team, according to Italian media. News of his death has prompted an outpouring of grief among both the Pakistani and Italian communities.
Friends, neighbours and members of the local Pakistani community have expressed condolences to the family following the tragic incident.
The case has also renewed attention to water safety, particularly at locations where swimming is prohibited because of hazardous conditions. Authorities regularly warn visitors against entering such areas due to the risks posed by deep water, strong currents and limited visibility.
Officials continue to urge the public to observe safety regulations at lakes and other recreational sites, especially during periods of high temperatures when more people seek relief near the water. Kamran’s death has underscored the dangers of swimming in restricted areas, even when attempting to assist others in distress.
