Pakistan’s freelancing industry is expanding at a remarkable pace. The country is strengthening its position in the global digital marketplace. New data shows a sharp rise in foreign exchange earnings during the first nine months of fiscal year 2025–26.
According to the State Bank of Pakistan, freelancers working in computer and IT services earned $856 million by the end of the third quarter. During the same period last year, earnings stood at $567 million. This reflects a strong increase of $289 million. The growth rate has crossed 50 percent, highlighting the sector’s rising importance.
This surge shows the growing strength of Pakistan’s digital workforce. Thousands of young professionals are joining freelancing platforms every month. Many are trained through government-backed and private sector programs. These initiatives are helping individuals develop in-demand digital skills.
Pakistan Freelancers Association Chairman Ibrahim Amin said the steady inflow of trained individuals is boosting exports of digital services. He added that freelancers are playing a key role in bringing foreign exchange into the country. This contribution is becoming vital for economic stability.
He also credited institutions like the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication, Pakistan Software Export Board, and the Special Investment Facilitation Council. These organizations are working to build a supportive ecosystem for freelancers. Their policies aim to improve training, access, and global competitiveness.
Despite the progress, serious challenges remain. Internet connectivity continues to be a major concern. Slow speeds and frequent disruptions are affecting productivity. Freelancers often struggle to meet deadlines due to unstable connections. This can harm their ratings on global platforms.
Power outages add another layer of difficulty. Many freelancers rely on consistent electricity to deliver work on time. Interruptions can lead to missed opportunities and financial losses. These issues create pressure in an already competitive global market.
According to the Asian Development Bank, Pakistan has over 2.37 million freelancers. This places the country among the top freelancing nations worldwide. The size of this workforce highlights its economic potential.
Recent technical issues have also raised concerns. Maintenance work on a submarine cable caused internet slowdowns across the country. Such disruptions impact thousands of online workers simultaneously. The losses are felt across multiple digital sectors.
Experts suggest long-term solutions are needed. Satellite-based internet could provide more reliable connectivity. It may reduce dependence on submarine cables and limit disruptions.
There is also optimism about the future. The rollout of 5G technology could significantly improve internet speed and stability. Faster connectivity would enhance productivity for freelancers, content creators, and remote workers.
