Pakistani artist Misha Japanwala has earned international recognition after creating custom costume pieces for Academy Award-winning actor Lupita Nyong’o in Christopher Nolan’s latest film, The Odyssey. Her work played a key role in bringing the iconic character of Helen of Troy to life on screen.
The collaboration has drawn attention worldwide. Moreover, it highlights the growing influence of Pakistani artists in global cinema and fashion.
Lupita Nyong’o Suggested Misha Japanwala for the Film
Lupita Nyong’o portrays Helen of Troy, the legendary queen of Sparta, in The Odyssey. To create an authentic visual identity for the character, the film’s costume team focused on realism and historical inspiration.
According to costume designer Ellen Mirojnick, the creative team wanted to ensure every detail reflected the character’s timeless presence. She explained that they “really had to get down to the realism” of Helen of Troy. It was Nyong’o who suggested bringing Misha Japanwala into the project.
The collaboration eventually resulted in two distinctive bronze accessories that became part of Helen’s on-screen wardrobe.
Bronze Neck and Shoulder Plate Became a Standout Piece
One of Japanwala’s creations was an asymmetrical bronze neck and shoulder plate. The piece rested over Nyong’o’s gown like a capelet during a scene in which Helen and her husband, King Menelaus, welcome Odysseus’ son Telemachus to Sparta.
The sculptural design immediately stood out because it blended artistic expression with historical inspiration.
Ellen Mirojnick described the striking accessory as “a broken statue.”
The design reflected Japanwala’s signature sculptural style while complementing the film’s ancient Greek setting.
Second Design Featured a Bronze Choker
Japanwala also created a bronze choker for another important sequence in the film.
Lupita Nyong’o wore the handcrafted piece with a chainmail kaftan during the farewell scene between Helen, Menelaus and Telemachus.
Although the costume carried considerable weight, Nyong’o embraced the challenge.
When Ellen Mirojnick expressed concern about the outfit’s heaviness, the actor confidently replied, “I’ve worn more pounds of Chanel pearls. I think I could do that.”
The response reflected both her confidence and commitment to fully portraying the character.
A Creative Partnership That Began Years Earlier
This was not the first collaboration between Lupita Nyong’o and Misha Japanwala. In fact, the two have shared a creative relationship for several years.
Japanwala previously designed a custom breastplate for Nyong’o to wear at the 2023 Tony Awards. The unique piece received widespread appreciation for its artistic craftsmanship and bold design.
Their professional relationship has therefore continued to grow through projects that combine fashion, sculpture and storytelling.

The connection between the actor and the Pakistani artist extends beyond professional collaborations.
Nyong’o attended Japanwala’s wedding in Karachi in 2022, reflecting their close friendship.
Later, she also borrowed a sari and jewellery from the artist for the opening night of the musical adaptation of filmmaker Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding.
These moments have further strengthened their creative partnership while showcasing Pakistan’s artistic talent on international platforms.
