ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has called on the United Nations Security Council to implement its own resolutions granting the Kashmiri people the right to self-determination through a UN-supervised plebiscite aimed at resolving the longstanding Kashmir dispute.
Speaking at a high-level UN Security Council debate on “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Advancing Adaptability in UN Peace Operations, Responding to New Realities,” Syed Tariq Fatemi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister/Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to the UN peacekeeping mission in the region.
He reminded the Council that UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan, established in 1949, continues to monitor the ceasefire along the Line of Control in the disputed Kashmir region.
โIt is the Council’s responsibility to ensure the realization of this right for the Kashmiri people and to promote a just and lasting settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute by taking steps to implement its own resolutions,โ Fatemi stated.
Highlighting Pakistanโs longstanding role in UN peacekeeping, Fatemi noted that the country has deployed 235,000 peacekeepers in 48 missions worldwide, with 181 Pakistani personnel sacrificing their lives in the service of international peace.
Currently, over 3,267 Pakistani peacekeepers are actively serving in seven UN missions, reaffirming the countryโs commitment to global peace efforts.
