ISLAMABAD: For the first time in Pakistan’s history Punjab witnessed the exposure of remote-controlled electricity theft.
As the world embraces advancing technologies, power thieves are also adopting modern techniques to evade authorities and engage in electricity pilferage without detection.

In Punjab’s Industrial area, a massive scandal involving billions of rupees worth of electricity theft has come to light, astonishing the technical staff of the Water And Power Development Authority (WAPDA).
WAPDA officials revealed that this is the first instance where they have encountered such a method of electricity theft in MDI meters, typically considered secure and immune to manipulation.
The illicit activity involved the use of remote control by an industrial unit to siphon off electricity.
It’s worth noting that the interim government has launched a crackdown on power theft nationwide to mitigate losses in the power sector and alleviate the burden of circular debt.
