In a significant move to enhance regional connectivity and infrastructure, Pakistan has announced plans to build an international airport in Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The project aims to provide state-of-the-art air travel facilities to millions of people, particularly those from the AJK region and the Pakistani diaspora abroad.
Officials confirmed that construction of the Mirpur International Airport is expected to begin within the current fiscal year, marking a major milestone in Pakistan’s efforts to improve transportation and economic development in the region.
Feasibility Study and Site Identification Underway
A spokesperson for the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) stated that the technical feasibility study and site identification process for the project have already begun. The feasibility work includes evaluating potential sites, environmental factors, and logistical requirements to ensure smooth execution.
“The Pakistan Airports Authority has initiated the process of technical feasibility, including site identification,” the spokesperson said. “The initial phase, including assessments and technical evaluations, is expected to be completed by December 2025.”
Once the feasibility study and design approvals are finalized, officials will announce the groundbreaking ceremony, which will mark the official start of construction. The airport’s design phase will determine the project’s scope, layout, and capacity, ensuring it meets international aviation standards.
Economic Boost and Improved Connectivity for AJK
The upcoming Mirpur International Airport is set to be a transformative development for Azad Jammu and Kashmir. It will greatly improve air connectivity for residents and overseas Pakistanis, many of whom currently rely on airports in Islamabad or other provinces.
Officials believe the new airport will not only enhance travel convenience but also stimulate regional economic growth, create employment opportunities, and attract domestic and foreign investment to AJK. By reducing travel time and increasing accessibility, the project is expected to foster stronger business and cultural ties between the region and the rest of the world.
The Pakistan Airports Authority reaffirmed its commitment to completing all technical, logistical, and regulatory processes on schedule. “The Authority aims to finalize all studies and approvals by the end of 2025,” the spokesperson added, emphasizing the government’s dedication to delivering this long-awaited infrastructure project.
