Pakistan is seeking international investment and financing for major projects while accelerating digital transformation to support sustainable economic growth.
The government is pursuing funding for Pakistan International Airlines, refinery upgrades and the Reko Diq mining project, according to officials.
Digital Economy Expansion
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb highlighted these priorities during meetings in New York on the third day of his visit for the 81st UN General Assembly session.
Speaking at a Digital Cooperation Organization ministerial dialogue, Aurangzeb urged member states to share successful digital approaches and attract investment. He said Pakistan was expanding digital public infrastructure and cashless payments as the economy moves from stabilization towards sustainable growth.
The government is also focusing on upskilling and reskilling digital workers to help them enter higher-value services and improve economic opportunities. Pakistan is further developing regulations for virtual assets, covering legislation, oversight and licensing. Officials see potential uses beyond cryptocurrency, including faster remittances.
The framework could also support the tokenization of public debt and real estate, according to the government’s broader digital economy strategy.
US EXIM Financing Discussed
Separately, Aurangzeb met US Export-Import Bank Chair John Jovanovich to discuss financing opportunities for major Pakistani projects.
Pakistan highlighted PIA’s interest in Boeing aircraft, particularly 787 Dreamliners, and sought financing covering aircraft and engines.
The government also requested spare parts to help return grounded Boeing 777 aircraft to service. Both sides agreed to continue developing a broader cooperation framework.
They also discussed possible financing for aircraft pre-delivery payments and support for refinery modernization.
On Reko Diq, Pakistan stressed the project’s importance for future exports and highlighted the financial costs linked to delays.
The government welcomed continued US EXIM Bank support for the mining project. Overall, the discussions focused on mobilizing international financing while advancing key sectors and digital development.
