Large-Scale Operation Launched in Shewa Area
Pakistan security forces launched a major area sanitization operation in the Shewa region of North Waziristan District following credible intelligence reports about militant presence in the area.
The operation began on May 17, 2026, as part of ongoing nationwide counterterror efforts aimed at eliminating militant networks operating near the border region.
According to security sources, troops successfully identified and targeted militant hideouts during the operation. Heavy exchanges of fire took place between security personnel and armed militants in several locations across the area.
Officials confirmed that 22 militants linked to the banned Fitna-al-Khwarij network were killed during the latest clashes over the past 24 hours. Authorities described the militants as being involved in multiple terrorist activities targeting both civilians and security forces.
Weapons, ammunition, and other equipment were recovered from the militants during the clearance operation. Security officials stated that the recovered material would help investigators trace militant activities and support networks operating in the region.
Security Forces Tighten Control Across Operation Zone
The entire operation area has now been fully cordoned off by security forces to prevent any escape routes for remaining militants. Troops continue search and clearance activities across mountainous and remote locations in the district.
Officials said intelligence-based operations remain focused on eliminating all active militant elements hiding inside the region. Security personnel are also conducting surveillance and monitoring activities to ensure complete control of the affected areas.
According to official statements, evidence collected during the operation revealed that militants had been using local residents as human shields to secure movement routes and avoid detection.
Authorities said militants allegedly intimidated and pressured civilians to assist them in obtaining safe passage across sensitive locations. Security officials strongly condemned such actions and described them as serious violations that placed innocent lives at risk.
Local sources reported that security forces increased patrols and checkpoints across nearby regions to strengthen safety measures and maintain stability during the ongoing operation.
Counterterror Campaign Continues Under National Security Vision
Pakistanโs military and law enforcement agencies stated that the operation is part of the countryโs broader counterterrorism campaign being carried out under the national security vision known as Azm-e-Istehkam.
The strategy was approved by the Federal Apex Committee under the National Action Plan framework. Officials said the campaign aims to remove all forms of foreign-sponsored terrorism from the country through coordinated intelligence and military operations.
Security officials emphasized that counterterror efforts will continue at full pace across sensitive regions facing militant threats. Authorities also reaffirmed their commitment to protecting civilians and restoring long-term peace in affected districts.
Defense analysts believe the latest operation highlights increasing efforts by security agencies to disrupt militant infrastructure and prevent future attacks.
The operation in North Waziristan comes at a time when authorities are intensifying intelligence-sharing and regional coordination to combat cross-border militant activities.
Officials said sanitization efforts are still underway and further updates may be released as operations continue in the region.
