ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s security forces responded to firing by Afghan Taliban forces after an attempted militant infiltration along the Kurram border, security sources said.
The sources said Pakistani troops foiled an attempted infiltration by militants belonging to Fitna al-Khawarij from Afghanistan into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The militants reportedly attempted to cross into the Kurram sector from Afghanistan’s Nangarhar and Paktia provinces.
Pakistani troops successfully stopped the infiltration attempt, according to security sources.
Afghan forces open fire on border posts
Following the failed infiltration, Afghan Taliban forces opened fire on Pakistani border posts using heavy weapons and mortars.
In response, the Pakistan Army launched retaliatory action against several Afghan Taliban border posts and defensive positions.
Pakistani forces used small arms, heavy weapons and artillery to target mortar and other military positions, the sources said.
Several Afghan Taliban personnel reportedly abandoned their positions and fled following the Pakistani response.
Meanwhile, Pakistani security forces remain on high alert and continue monitoring the situation along the border.
The latest exchange follows Pakistan’s strikes against militant hideouts in Afghanistan’s border region.
Pakistan targets militant compounds
The Information Ministry said Pakistan’s security forces targeted three sites linked to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan on Monday.
The ministry said the strikes destroyed three militant compounds, including a training centre for suicide bombers.
It also claimed that 28 militants, including several suspected suicide bombers, were killed in the operation.
Weapons and ammunition stored at the sites were also destroyed, according to the ministry.
The strikes followed intelligence-based operations in Kohat, Hangu and surrounding areas on September 20.
Pakistani authorities said those operations killed nine militants.
Officials also identified an Afghan national among the suicide bombers involved in the September 2026 attack on a police compound mosque in Kohat.
