Pakistan Railways has announced the temporary suspension of train services between Quetta and Peshawar for two days due to worsening flood conditions in several areas. Authorities confirmed that the popular Jaffar Express will not operate on August 25 and 26 as a precautionary step to ensure passenger safety.
Despite the suspension, the Chaman Passenger Train departed Quetta on schedule. It highlighted that not all routes have been affected. Officials emphasized that operational adjustments will continue based on evolving weather and flood updates.
Precautionary Measures for Passenger Safety
Flooding has created risks along certain railway sections, making uninterrupted travel difficult. Pakistan Railways explained that the decision was taken in the interest of public safety. Moreover, it noted that track conditions can deteriorate rapidly during heavy rains. Such temporary suspensions are part of a broader safety protocol designed to avoid accidents and minimize disruptions in the long term.
Modernization and Digital Upgrades Underway
Pakistan Railways is managing challenges caused by natural disasters. Meanwhile, it is also implementing a large-scale digital modernization programme aimed at improving efficiency, safety, and reliability.
Key upgrades include:
-
Computerized interlocking systems being installed at Landhi, Jummagoth, Badal Nala, and Sarhad stations. These systems will replace outdated manual controls, allowing for improved train routing and accident prevention.
-
Digital microwave radio communication systems are being deployed along the Karachi-Lahore section. These systems will ensure seamless and secure data transmission. They are intended to improve operational reliability.
-
Push-to-Talk digital communication networks being gradually introduced across Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sukkur, and Karachi divisions. This upgrade will enhance real-time communication between control rooms and field staff, helping avoid delays and improving coordination.
These initiatives reflect Pakistan Railways’ efforts to reduce inefficiencies, modernize infrastructure, and ensure safer travel experiences for millions of passengers across the country.
While natural challenges like flooding continue to disrupt train schedules, the ongoing modernization drive shows Pakistan Railways’ commitment to long-term improvements. The introduction of advanced signalling systems and stronger communication networks is expected to not only prevent accidents but also support more reliable freight and passenger operations.
The suspension of Quetta-Peshawar services highlights the importance of safety-first decision-making. At the same time, however, it underlines the urgent need for infrastructure that can withstand extreme weather events. As upgrades progress, passengers can expect safer, faster, and more efficient rail journeys across Pakistan in the years to come.
