LAHORE, October 19: Pakistan Railways has announced a major change in the management of Karakoram Express. A private company will take over the train’s operations from October 30, 2026.
The decision forms part of the government’s plan to expand private sector involvement in railway services.
Prime Rail to Take Control of Karakoram Express
According to Pakistan Railways, private company Prime Rail will manage the Karakoram Express from October 30.
The train operates between Lahore and Karachi, serving passengers traveling between the two major cities.
Pakistan Railways will continue handling ticket bookings until October 29.
However, Prime Rail will take responsibility for ticket reservations and related operations from October 30.
New Ticket Booking System Announced
Authorities have also allowed Prime Rail to begin ticket reservations under the new arrangement.
Officials have instructed the management of the Raabta app to start advance bookings.
The transition aims to support the government’s wider railway reform strategy.
Meanwhile, passengers should check booking details before planning their journeys.
Pakistan Railways Expands Privatization Plan
Earlier this month, Pakistan Railways announced plans to transfer four major passenger trains to private operators.
These included Karakoram Express, Millat Express, Awam Express, and Mianwali Express.
Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi has also directed officials to improve railway security, operational planning, and service standards.
The government hopes private participation will improve efficiency and passenger services.
However, officials have not announced any changes to Karakoram Express ticket prices under the new arrangement.
The upcoming transfer marks another step in Pakistan Railways’ efforts to improve management and attract private investment.
