The Pakistan Navy (PN) has successfully launched its fourth Hangor-class submarine, named Ghazi, at the Shuangliu Base in Wuhan, China, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed on Wednesday. This milestone marks another significant achievement in Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen its naval capabilities.
All Four Submarines in China Near Completion
According to ISPR, the launch of Ghazi signifies that all four Hangor-class submarines being constructed in China are now undergoing rigorous sea trials and are in the final stages of handover to Pakistan. These submarines are part of a broader contract aimed at modernizing Pakistan’s underwater fleet.
“The Government of Pakistan signed an agreement with China for the acquisition of eight Hangor-class submarines,” ISPR stated.
Transfer of Technology and Local Construction
Under this agreement:
-
Four submarines are being built in China.
-
The remaining four will be constructed locally at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works Ltd (KS&EW) under a Transfer of Technology (ToT) arrangement.
This local construction initiative is expected to enhance Pakistan’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers for strategic defense platforms.
Advanced Weapons and Sensors
ISPR highlighted that the Hangor-class submarines will be equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, capable of engaging targets at standoff ranges. These features will significantly enhance Pakistan Navy’s operational effectiveness, particularly in safeguarding the country’s maritime interests.
The submarines are designed to play a pivotal role in maintaining regional peace and stability, providing a strong deterrent capability in the Arabian Sea and surrounding waters.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
The launch ceremony was attended by senior officials from both Pakistan and China, underscoring the strengthening defense ties between the two countries. ISPR emphasized that this partnership not only contributes to Pakistan’s defense preparedness but also reflects deepening bilateral cooperation in the defense sector.
Strategic Significance
The Hangor-class submarines represent a major step forward in Pakistan’s naval modernization program. With the combination of advanced technology from China and local manufacturing expertise, Pakistan aims to maintain a credible underwater deterrence capability.
The Ghazi launch reinforces Pakistan Navy’s commitment to safeguarding national maritime boundaries and enhancing regional security through a modern and capable submarine fleet.
