ISLAMABAD: Pakistan government has decided to initiate a debate in the Parliament over the creation of new provinces.
The next couple of weeks could be crucial for discussions on creating new provinces and administrative units in Pakistan.
According to sources, legal and constitutional experts are finalising key issues before Parliament begins formal discussions on the proposal.
The government is also developing a strategy for convening a joint sitting of Parliament to discuss the matter.
Meanwhile, legal teams are examining constitutional questions surrounding a possible joint sitting and referendum.
Officials are also working to build political consensus on creating new provinces and administrative units across the country.
The debate has gained momentum in recent months, with several federal ministers publicly supporting administrative reforms.
Calls grow for administrative reforms
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has repeatedly argued that Pakistan’s existing governance system cannot effectively address the country’s major challenges.
Speaking at the Pakistan Economic Summit in Islamabad, Naqvi said the system had remained largely unchanged for 70 years.
He maintained that democracy remains essential, but different democratic models could provide better governance and stronger public services.
Naqvi also argued that continuing with the current system could leave the same problems unresolved for another decade.
Therefore, he suggested taking the question of new administrative units or provinces directly to the public.
Meanwhile, British MP Asif Siddique Sahi has also supported creating new provinces or administrative units in Pakistan.
Sahi, who originally comes from Bahawalpur, said Britain’s parliamentary system helps ensure that governance benefits reach ordinary citizens.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters in Bahawalpur on August 9.
The growing political debate could now move toward Parliament as officials complete legal preparations and seek wider political agreement.
Furthermore, supporters believe new administrative structures could improve governance and ensure better access to essential public services.
