Pakistan’s junior hockey team narrowly missed the Sultan of Johor Cup 2026 title after losing to hosts Malaysia in a penalty shootout on Saturday. The final ended in a 2-2 draw at Johor Bahru’s Taman Daya Hockey Stadium before Malaysia secured a 4-3 shootout victory.
Pakistan delivered a strong performance early in the match, establishing a two-goal advantage. However, Malaysia fought back in front of its home crowd and eventually claimed the championship after a tense finish.
Pakistan Take Early Lead in Thrilling Final
Pakistan opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Rana Waleed converted a penalty corner. Four minutes later, Muhammad Usman extended the lead to 2-0, putting Pakistan in a promising position.
Nevertheless, Malaysia responded quickly through Muhammad Adam Asyraf Johari, who scored from a penalty corner in the 25th minute. His goal reduced Pakistan’s advantage and gave the hosts renewed hope before the interval.
After the break, Malaysia increased the pressure and searched for an equaliser. Pakistan’s defence resisted several attacks, but Dheeressh Gunaseelan eventually converted a penalty corner in the 49th minute to level the score at 2-2.
Neither team managed another goal during regular play. Consequently, the final moved into a penalty shootout to determine the tournament winner.
Malaysia Clinch Title After Penalty Shootout
Malaysia converted four attempts during the shootout to secure a 4-3 victory. Pakistan also scored through Ali Hamza and Rana Waleed, who converted twice, but missed attempts proved costly.
The defeat denied Pakistan the opportunity to lift the trophy despite their impressive fight throughout the final. Meanwhile, Malaysia celebrated a memorable victory after recovering from a two-goal deficit.
Pakistan’s journey to the final marked their return to the tournament’s title match after a 10-year gap. The team earned praise for its performance and determination against the hosts.
Although Pakistan finished as runners-up, the campaign offered encouragement for the country’s junior hockey programme. The players demonstrated their ability to compete strongly against international opponents, providing hope for future tournaments.
