Visitors Seek Series-Saving Victory
Pakistan will attempt to rescue the two-match series when they face the West Indies in the second and final Test in Trinidad.
The match will begin at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain on Sunday, August 2, 2026. West Indies lead the series 1-0 after securing a commanding 90-run victory in the opening Test.
Pakistan must win the final Test to draw the series. A West Indies victory or draw will secure the series for the hosts.
The match also carries important World Test Championship points. Pakistan are currently ninth in the standings, while West Indies occupy eighth position. Both teams need stronger results to improve their position in the 2025-27 championship cycle.
West Indies will enter the contest with growing confidence. Their pace attack exposed serious weaknesses in Pakistan’s batting during the opening match.
Pakistan’s bowlers also performed strongly. However, another batting failure prevented the visitors from taking advantage of a promising position.
The Queen’s Park Oval surface could again provide assistance to fast bowlers. Both teams are expected to rely heavily on their pace attacks, especially with the new ball.
First-Test Collapse Leaves Pakistan Under Pressure
West Indies scored 311 in their first innings of the opening Test at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba.
Shai Hope led the hosts with 92, while Kavem Hodge contributed 84. Mohammad Ali claimed four wickets for Pakistan, and Mohammad Abbas took three.
Pakistan responded with 282.
Shan Masood produced an excellent innings of 109, while Imam-ul-Haq scored 63. Their contributions placed Pakistan in a competitive position before the middle and lower order collapsed.
Justin Greaves changed the match with a devastating spell of five wickets for 27 runs. His performance prevented Pakistan from securing a first-innings lead.
Pakistan’s fast bowlers then created another opportunity by dismissing West Indies for 181 in the second innings.
Mohammad Abbas delivered a superb performance and claimed five wickets for 22 runs. His spell left Pakistan needing 211 to win the Test.
The target appeared achievable, but Pakistan’s batting collapsed under pressure.
Jayden Seales took five wickets for only 20 runs as Pakistan were bowled out for 120. West Indies completed a 90-run victory and took control of the series.
Pakistan’s repeated batting collapses remain their biggest concern.
The visitors must handle the new ball more effectively in Port of Spain. Their top order will need to survive the opening spells from Seales, Shamar Joseph and Kemar Roach.
West Indies will again target Pakistan’s middle order with pace, movement and sustained pressure.
Pakistan have enough bowling quality to challenge the hosts. However, their bowlers will need greater support from the batting unit.
A competitive first-innings total could bring Pakistan back into the series. Another low score could allow West Indies to take complete control.
Shan Masood Injury Forces Selection Rethink
Pakistan have suffered a major setback ahead of the decisive Test after Shan Masood was ruled out with a finger injury.
Masood fractured the index finger of his left hand after being struck by a Jayden Seales delivery during Pakistan’s first innings in Tarouba.
He continued batting and completed his century. However, the injury later forced him to move down the batting order during Pakistan’s second innings.
Medical scans confirmed the fracture. Masood will remain with the squad while receiving treatment from Pakistan’s medical team.
His availability for Pakistan’s first Test against England in Leeds on August 19 will depend on his recovery.
Pakistan now face an important selection decision.
Abdullah Shafique and Saud Shakeel were added to the squad after Abdullah Fazal was ruled out of the series with a back injury.
Uncapped right-handed batter Awais Zafar is also being considered for a possible Test debut.
Masood’s absence removes Pakistan’s only century-maker from the opening Test. It also increases the pressure on Babar Azam, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha.
West Indies are expected to retain the core of the team that won the first Test.
Captain Roston Chase will look towards Seales, Joseph, Roach and Greaves to maintain pressure on Pakistan’s vulnerable batting order.
Shai Hope and Kavem Hodge will again carry major responsibility in the hosts’ batting line-up.
For Pakistan, the equation is clear.
They must improve their batting, survive the new ball and make full use of their pace attack. Anything less could result in a series defeat and further damage their World Test Championship campaign.
