The federal government has officially announced public holidays on the 9th and 10th of Muharram-ul-Haram, corresponding to the 5th and 6th of July (Saturday and Sunday), in observance of Ashura.
According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Thursday, the approval to declare these holidays was granted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The decision applies to all government offices, regardless of whether they follow a five-day or six-day workweek.
Ashura, which falls on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, holds deep religious significance for Muslims, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala. During this period, mourning processions and religious gatherings are held across the country, with special security arrangements typically put in place to ensure public safety.
The announcement aligns with Pakistan’s longstanding practice of observing public holidays during Ashura, allowing citizens to participate in religious observances, majalis (gatherings), and processions that mark these solemn days.
Authorities have also appealed to the public to observe the days peacefully and to cooperate with law enforcement to maintain order and security during the processions.
Religious scholars and clerics have called for unity and respect among different sects during Muharram, emphasizing the importance of peaceful commemoration and harmony.
Meanwhile, local administrations in various cities are expected to announce traffic plans and security measures to manage large gatherings and processions effectively.
The notification further reminded all federal and provincial departments, autonomous bodies, and semi-government institutions to implement the public holiday decision accordingly.
