Pakistan strongly condemned the use of pellet guns in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the Foreign Office said on Saturday. Spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi described the practice as unacceptable and well documented.
Speaking at a media briefing, Andrabi said pellet guns were widely used between 2016 and 2018. However, he added that their use continues to some extent even today.
He said international reports and civil society organizations had extensively documented the issue. Consequently, Pakistan renewed its call against the use of pellet guns.
Foreign Office Cites International Reports
Andrabi referred to an Amnesty International report highlighting injuries caused by pellet guns. He said the report documented numerous cases of blindness and condemned their use.
The spokesperson also cited reports issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in 2018 and 2019. Furthermore, he said these reports recorded the issue in detail.
According to Andrabi, civil society organizations have continued monitoring the situation. He added that records of victims, rehabilitation, and treatment remain available.
Pakistan Calls Practice Unacceptable
The Foreign Office said the use of pellet guns should be condemned wherever it occurs. Andrabi stated that Pakistan opposes their use in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir as well as other parts of India.
He also referred to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights while discussing crowd-control measures. Although India has described pellet guns as a crowd-control tool, Pakistan maintained that their use remains unacceptable.
