Nauman Khan Delivers Commanding Opening Victory
Pakistan advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Junior Squash Championships team event after defeating Canada 2-0.
The pre-quarterfinal contest was played at the White Oaks Resort and Spa in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada.
Nauman Khan gave Pakistan a strong start against Canada’s Colten McLaughlin.
The Pakistani junior controlled the opening game and secured an 11-5 victory.
McLaughlin produced greater resistance in the second game. However, Nauman remained composed during the decisive points.
He claimed the closely contested game 13-11 and moved within one game of victory.
The third game was also competitive. Nauman protected his advantage and completed an 11-9 win.
His straight-game triumph gave Pakistan a crucial 1-0 lead in the knockout tie.
Nauman’s performance placed immediate pressure on the Canadian team.
It also allowed Abdullah Nawaz to enter the second match with Pakistan only one victory away from the quarterfinals.
Abdullah Nawaz Survives Five-Game Battle
Abdullah Nawaz faced Calder Murray in the second match of the tie.
The Canadian player made a confident start and won the opening game 11-9.
Abdullah responded strongly in the second game.
He improved his control and levelled the contest with an 11-7 victory.
The Pakistani player then claimed a tight third game 11-9.
Murray refused to surrender and dominated the fourth game 11-6.
The result forced a deciding fifth game, with Pakistan’s place in the quarterfinals hanging in the balance.
Abdullah produced his strongest squash when it mattered most.
He established an early advantage and gave Murray little opportunity to recover.
The Pakistani junior won the final game 11-3.
His 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 6-11, 11-3 victory completed Pakistan’s 2-0 triumph.
A third match was not required because Pakistan had already secured the tie.
The victory continued Pakistan’s unbeaten run in the team competition.
Pakistan entered the knockout stage after finishing first in Group 7.
The national team opened its campaign with a 3-0 victory over Nigeria.
Nauman Khan, Abdullah Nawaz and Muhammad Umair Arif all won their matches in that tie.
Pakistan then defeated Switzerland 3-0 to confirm top position in the group.
Nauman overcame Nick Greter in four games.
Abdullah defeated Leandro Vogel in straight games, while Umair comfortably beat Morris Frey.
Pakistan’s consistent group-stage performances earned the team a place in the round of 16 against host nation Canada.
Defending Champions Egypt Await Pakistan
Pakistan will now face defending champions Egypt in the quarterfinals.
Egypt secured its place in the last eight with a straight-match victory over Ireland.
The Egyptian team remains one of the leading contenders for the junior world title.
Pakistan will therefore face its toughest challenge of the tournament.
The quarterfinal will be played on the all-glass showcourt at 6:30pm local time on Wednesday, July 29.
The match will begin at approximately 3:30am Pakistan Standard Time on Thursday, July 30.
Pakistan entered the competition as the seventh-seeded team.
The squad includes Abdullah Nawaz, Nauman Khan, Muhammad Umair Arif and Yahya Khan.
The team event features national squads of four players aged under 19.
A total of 24 teams are competing in the championship.
The men’s and women’s team competitions began on July 26 and will conclude on July 31.
Pakistan’s victory over Canada has placed the country among the final eight teams.
A win against Egypt would send Pakistan into the semifinals and keep its world championship campaign alive.
